Active Schools at Geelong East Primary School

At Geelong East Primary we are proud to be an Active School. An Active School encourages physical activity through a whole school approach that goes beyond traditional physical education and sport to promote physical activity at every opportunity. The Active Schools Framework outlines six key priorities of an Active School recognising there is no single solution to shifting inactivity. The key priorities of Active Schools are Quality Physical Education, Quality School Sport, Active Classrooms, Active Travel and Active Recreation. A supportive school environment.
In 2021 and 2022 we were successful in achieving two $30,000 grants from the Victorian Government to help us develop Geelong East Primary as an Active School. This funding went towards developing our Physical Education Program by providing speciality training and development for staff and the purchase of new equipment. We enhanced playground spaces for our students by installing a rock bouldering wall, new line marking and fitness track on the oval. We are passionate about using movement to enhance learning in all aspects of the curriculum. Our classrooms are equipped with flexible seating such as standing desks and teachers incorporate physical activity daily as part of their Numeracy and Literacy lessons. As part of Active Recreation, we regularly invite coaches from local sporting clubs to work with our students in a range of sports such as AFL, Netball, Taekwondo, Hockey and Gymnastics
