In 2025, Geelong East Primary School introduced Auslan to all students as our chosen Language Other than English (LOTE). Language, whether spoken or sign, is a powerful carrier of culture. By introducing Auslan in school, we provide students with the opportunity to learn about the Deaf community and its rich culture. This exposure promotes empathy, acceptance, and respect for different ways of life.

Learning to express oneself through sign language encourages clarity and precision in communication, which is a valuable skill in any field. Additionally, students develop active listening skills as they engage with their peers using Auslan, improving their ability to comprehend nonverbal cues and body language.
